[my writing life] Wanted: Permissions for Poem Starters

NPM2013_logo_350I’m toying with the idea of sharing a Poem Starter a day in April for National Poetry Month. But I don’t want it to be me, me, me! So, I’m looking for children’s poetry books to share poems from. Here are the details:

  • Please look at the two poem starters I’ve shared. I will follow the same format with other people’s books.
  • I’ll share your name and the title of the book. If I own the book or can get it from my library, I’ll show the book cover, too.
  • No rhyming picture books. There are individual poems only.
  • Poems have to be pretty short–probably 20 lines or fewer.
  • Book must be still in print in paper edition from a traditional children’s publisher.
  • If you tell me the book you’re willing to offer permission for, I’ll choose the poem (based on personal taste and poem starter idea I come up with).
  • These are poems and poem starters geared toward elementary kids–mostly primary grades, but I’m open to upper elementary, too.
  • You don’t need to send me a copy of the book. Just comment with the title and your permission for me to read a poem out loud from the book in a video to appear online.
  • Feel free to offer up your specific poem from an anthology (though I’ll use fewer of those).

I’ll see what kind of response I get. If I don’t do a poem starter a day for April, I’d still like to start featuring other people’s poems in my Poem Starter series, anyway:>)

Please pass this along to any children’s poets you think might be interested. Thanks!

  2. Oh I should tell you what the books (and e-books) are:

    P*tag
    Gift Tag
    The Arrow Finds Its Mark
    The Poetry Friday Anthology
The Poetry Friday Anthology – Middle School Edition
    And The Crowd Goes Wild
The National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry

  3. I’d love to send you the 5 poems that have appeared in books from the past year. You included one of them already though so maybe I can also send you the poems from e-books as well. SALAS POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • I’m sticking to just physical books for this round–might expand to include ebooks later, though. But yes, if you’ll email me your five poems, I’d love to choose one for my April set! Thanks!

  5. Hi Laura,
I’m an Australian children’s poet, my latest collection is about to hit book shelves on April 1st. Walker books has three pages selected that I’m allowed to use for publicity- which you could read form. I love teaching poetry too. This collection is called ‘Guinea pig town and other poems about animals.’ Happy to email the selected pages to you…

Book cover and all about the book is up online at :

    best wishes,
    Lorraine Marwood

    • Hi Lorraine–Fun! If you’d like to email me those three pages, I’d be happy to read them and see if one will work for my Poem Starters videos. I have several criteria re length, etc., but hopefully one of yours will fit! Thanks!

    • Thanks, Jeanne–at the moment I’m limiting it to books published specifically for children (even though there are obviously kid-appropriate poems in many adult poetry collections). That might change in the future, though. I love your shrimp poem, especially!

  7. I would love to be on one of your starters with FOREST HAS A SONG if you would like to include it. If you would like a copy, I will ask Clarion to send you one (please just snail mail me your address). Thank you! xo,a .

  8. Great idea, Laura! If you think something in LIZARD LOU would be suitable, I’d love for you to use it. I’ll email you with some details. Will you also be encouraging your readers to write the poems and post them on their blogs?

    • Thanks, Renee. I’m not sure whether I’ll be encouraging posting on my blog because with my April schedule, I’m just not sure I’d be able to reply to everyone (responding to poems takes a lot more time than just responding to comments). I’ll have to think about that part of it. Hmm. The general idea of the Poem Starters is that they are for teachers to take back to their classroooms and use, not really a blog activity. Clearly, I’ll have to figure out how exactly I want to handle this before I start posting them! :D

      • (Oh, but I didn’t mean they would post their poems on your blog like in 15 Words. I meant they’d take the prompt and post a poem on their OWN blogs, maybe just putting a linky list in your posts to collect them so people can share. Then you wouldn’t have to comment, you’d just be home base for the activity.) Anyway, I was just wondering because someone asked me if I knew of any April writing activities going on. So ignore me. As you were! :)

        • Oh, that’s an interesting thought. Hmmm…going to think about that. I’m trying to reach a wider audience than teachers who blog, but…it would be cool if the person whose poem was featured in the poem starter wanted to go around and visit any blogs with poems inspired by their poems. OK, thinking cap on…
